The Notebook

110 min. feature film, 2013 D: János Szász

The Notebook (Le Grand Cahier), directed by János Szász, is based on a widely admired novel, written in French, by the Hungarian-born Nobel prize winner Agota Kristof. It is a dark fairy tail, a parable about brutality and resilience, about how war can turn even two innocent boys into cruel creatures.
The challenge in my job was to find a way, in the editing, to convey the very ascetic, detached language of the book into an audiovisual style and to maximize the emotional impact of a fragmented storytelling and detached acting.

The film won the Grand Prix Cristal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2013 and was short-listed for the 86th Annual Academy Awards' foreign-language category in 2014.
